In a sad and troubling move, a little over a week ago MPs voted down amendments to the Agriculture Bill that protect UK farmers from global imports produced to even lower standards of food safety, animal welfare and environmental protection than those required of UK farmers.
One would think that the current global pandemic might have been the wake-up call needed to help put an end to factory farming – one of the most likely sources of the next (possibly much worse) disease outbreak, thanks to the routine use of antibiotics in squalid conditions. But alas no, it appears our food standards are moving in the opposite direction!
What can you do to help prevent this slide?
If, like us, you are deeply disheartened by this troubling move in the wrong direction, there are a couple of ways in which you can help:
1) Sign the National Farmers’ Union Petition
2) Write to your local MP. The excellent Farms Not Factories have drafted up an excellent template letter you can use here. (Here you can see a list of MPs that voted against the amendments)
Consumer Power
The other way of course in which you can help protect the planet and its inhabitants is by continuing to choose high welfare, antibiotic, hormone and GMO free meat by consuming only Organic British meat. (Learn more here about the different meat certification standards in the UK).
We’d like to take this opportunity to again say thank-you for doing so!
